The Chapel Rocks Block Party

Residents of the Chapel section of Fairwood hosted their first-ever block party to help residents get to know one another. Most Chapel residents have lived in the community for two years or less, and the event represents the first time all residents came together in one place.

Check out a video produced by one of our residents.

A New Year's Message to Fairwood Residents

By the Fairwood Community Association Executive Committee

As we celebrate the New Year, the members of the Fairwood Community Association Board of Directors and Executive Committee would like to extend to everyone our appreciation for your choosing to be part of our community.

Last year was an incredible year. Our very successful community yard sale, summer community day, National Night Out and our recent holiday event provided excellent opportunities for neighbors to come together and even have a little fun, and we look forward to even more neighbors participating next year as our community continues to grow.

We expanded channels through which we communicate and receive feedback from our residents by adding Facebook,Twitter and a Fairwood Community Blog to our toolbox.

The year also saw the addition of EarthFruits Yogurt and Jazzy's restaurant to our community, as well as establishments that provide beauty supplies and even Asian cuisine to our residents.

As we approach 2014, we have much to look forward to. Many of you may have noticed how work has already begun to prepare the parcels of land on the east side of Church Road for further expansion of our community.

NV Homes and Ryan homes will build homes in the remaining sections of Fairwood. We're projected to reach 75 percent completion in 2015, at which point control of the Fairwood Community Association will transfer from the developer to residents. For this reason, we highly recommend all residents become knowledgeable of and involved in our community's governing process.

Help Close the Door on Crime!

From the Fairwood Surveillance Committee

Most homeowners envision burglars breaking a window or forcing a door open to gain access into a home. Not so. Nearly half of all residential burglaries occur via access through an unlocked door or window. But the quickest and simplest means for most burglars to gain entry is often through an open garage door.

Garage door security is critical. FBI, local Sheriff/Police data and Department of Justice Statistics all tell us repeatedly that thousands of homes are burglarized every year. Many of these burglaries had one thing in common: owners who left garage doors open.Police say open garages invite burglars who, once in, may take the opportunity to walk through another door into the home. And anything can happen once they are in your house.

Don't risk yourself or your family's safety. The best advice is to always keep garage doors closed when not in use. Simply leaving a garage door open can lead to more serious crimes such as murder, rape, kidnaping, and or home invasion robberies to name a few.

Fairwood community promotes safety at 2013 National Night Out

Fairwood residents continue into the night visiting tables and listenning to presentations by state and local officials.
The 2013 National Night Out event at Fairwood kept hundreds of residents engaged throughout the event with food fun and lots of good information on safety and preparedness.

By Deidra L. McGee

The annual National Night Out in our community was another success this year in the Fairwood Community. There was something for everyone to enjoy at any age. Highlights included: a puppet show, delicious pizza, yummy popcorn, refreshing snow cones, pink cotton candy, helicopters flew in from both the state and county police aviation unitsfire trucks were on display, music was provided by WHUR, dancing took place in the street and many trivia prizes were distributed.

Various booths were set up supplying residents with information focused on safety such as: an emergency supply list, preparing your older americans for emergencies and preparing your pets for safety that were all provided by members of the Prince George's County Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT. Residents can find comprehensive information on emergency preparedness by visiting www.ready.gov

A Fairwood Community Association board member also touted an updated version of the FEMA smartphone app that's available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry handsets. It's a helpful tool for putting together your emergency supply kit or even reporting disaster damage.

Prince Georges County provided brochures letting all residents know about Fairwood community promotes safety at 2013 National Night Out and safety text alerts by registering at: https://notifyme.princegeorgescountymd.gov

The Glenn Dale Fire Association will be having a Fire Prevention & Life Safety Open House on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, from noon to 4 p.m.

Let’s continue to keep the Fairwood community safe one by getting to know your neighbors, by knowing who your block captains are, and by being observant and aware in your respective neighborhood and throughout the community as a whole. If you seesomething that doesn’t look right or see someone who is causing harm, say something by calling Fairwood security at (301) 331-4362 tor Dial 911.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and let’s look forward to having a safe fall season!

Fire Safety: Planning for People with Disabilities

By Sheldon Smith, Communications Committee
Like many communities across America, I’m sure Fairwood is home to several people with disabilities. While we as a community encourage everyone to plan for disasters like fire, I believe it’s especially important to understand the unique risks people with access and functional needs may have, and plan for keeping them safe during such an emergency.
The U.S. Fire Administration, part of FEMA, has provided a Fire Safety Checklist for People with Disabilities. I encourage everyone to visit this page, take the necessary steps to keep yourself or others with disabilities safe, and tell a friend or neighbor about this resource.
We want everyone’s Fairwood experience to be safe and enjoyable.
