Get Trained to Help Your Neighbors During Emergencies

Emergencies happen all the time. It's important to have training and practice needed to know how to properly respond to many different situations that may occur.

At home, once you have built your kit and developed your plan you need to practice and maintain it. Train your family to manage disasters by practicing and conducting family disaster drills. This will help you know what to do during difficult times.

In your communities, there are tons of really great training opportunities across the country aimed to help emergency managers, first responders, community organizers and volunteers learn more about responding to a variety of emergency situations. These programs are designed to get you the information and training you need to start doing the same in your communities.

Today, we're introducing you to just a few of the many different training and volunteer opportunities found nationally to help you prepare yourself, your family and your community for many different emergency situations:

 Community Emergency Response Team Training
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

The annual National Night Out in our community was another success this year in the Fairwood Community. There was something for everyone to enjoy at any age. Highlights included: a puppet show, delicious pizza, yummy popcorn, refreshing snow cones, pink cotton candy, helicopters flew in from both the state and county police aviation unitsfire trucks were on display, music was provided by WHUR, dancing took place in the street and many trivia prizes were distributed.

Various booths were set up supplying residents with information focused on safety such as: an emergency supply list, preparing your older americans for emergencies and preparing your pets for safety that were all provided by members of the Prince George's County Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT. Residents can find comprehensive information on emergency preparedness by visiting www.ready.gov

A Fairwood Community Association board member also touted an updated version of the FEMA smartphone app that's available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry handsets. It's a helpful tool for putting together your emergency supply kit or even reporting disaster damage.

Prince Georges County provided brochures letting all residents know about Fairwood community promotes safety at 2013 National Night Out and safety text alerts by registering at: https://notifyme.princegeorgescountymd.gov

Fire Safety: Planning for People with Disabilities

By Sheldon Smith, Communications Committee
Like many communities across America, I’m sure Fairwood is home to several people with disabilities. While we as a community encourage everyone to plan for disasters like fire, I believe it’s especially important to understand the unique risks people with access and functional needs may have, and plan for keeping them safe during such an emergency.
The U.S. Fire Administration, part of FEMA, has provided a Fire Safety Checklist for People with Disabilities. I encourage everyone to visit this page, take the necessary steps to keep yourself or others with disabilities safe, and tell a friend or neighbor about this resource.
We want everyone’s Fairwood experience to be safe and enjoyable.
