Safety Alert: Criminal Incident Near Fairwood Green Shopping Center

From the Fairwood Executive Committee

Our community experienced a robbery attempt and shooting this morning that left no one injured, but created a significant level of concern. There was a period of significant police activity, and residents were asked to remain securely indoors.

Although police confirmed that the suspects fled from Fairwood, media reports indicate that the suspects are "still at large and are all described as black men in their late teens or early 20s."  They provided the following descriptions:

  • First suspect is described as heavyset, with dreadlocks.
  • Second suspect is described as having a skinny build, and with a mohawk and wearing a Redskins hat.
  • Third suspect was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

As a result of this mornings' incident at Fairwood, the police have beefed up patrols in our area, and will continue the increased presence for the next several days. You will also see perimeter checks being conducted in our neighborhood over the next several days. The Prince George’s County Police Department wants us to stress to our neighborhood the following:

  • If you see something, say something – report suspicious activity or individuals
  • Call 911 first before calling anyone else

We need the continued support of everyone to help ensure the safety of our fellow residents.

Help Close the Door on Crime!

From the Fairwood Surveillance Committee

Most homeowners envision burglars breaking a window or forcing a door open to gain access into a home. Not so. Nearly half of all residential burglaries occur via access through an unlocked door or window. But the quickest and simplest means for most burglars to gain entry is often through an open garage door.

Garage door security is critical. FBI, local Sheriff/Police data and Department of Justice Statistics all tell us repeatedly that thousands of homes are burglarized every year. Many of these burglaries had one thing in common: owners who left garage doors open.Police say open garages invite burglars who, once in, may take the opportunity to walk through another door into the home. And anything can happen once they are in your house.

Don't risk yourself or your family's safety. The best advice is to always keep garage doors closed when not in use. Simply leaving a garage door open can lead to more serious crimes such as murder, rape, kidnaping, and or home invasion robberies to name a few.

Commemorating the 1963 March on Washington

By Michelle Jackson, Fairwood Community Executive Committee

On August 24, 1963, thousands of people marched on Washington, DC, to call for civil rights, jobs, economic opportunity, voting rights, and equality for all. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom led to the passage of some of the most important pieces of legislation of the 20th century.

This year marks 50 years since the March on Washington. On Saturday, August 24, a number of Fairwood Residents will join the NAACP, the National Action Network, and others to commemorate the anniversary of the March. The focus of the National Action to Realize the Dream March will be on workers’ rights, gun violence, immigration, and other critical issues affecting our nation.

We will LEAVE the Sycamore Club at 6:30 a.m.m on Saturday, August 24th and car pool to the New Carrolton Metro Station.  We will take the Orange Line to Foggy Bottom-GWU, and walk to the Lincoln Memorial, where the program will begin at 8 a.m.

Yes it's early, but think of all of the sacrifices that were made for us!

Fire Safety: Planning for People with Disabilities

By Sheldon Smith, Communications Committee
Like many communities across America, I’m sure Fairwood is home to several people with disabilities. While we as a community encourage everyone to plan for disasters like fire, I believe it’s especially important to understand the unique risks people with access and functional needs may have, and plan for keeping them safe during such an emergency.
The U.S. Fire Administration, part of FEMA, has provided a Fire Safety Checklist for People with Disabilities. I encourage everyone to visit this page, take the necessary steps to keep yourself or others with disabilities safe, and tell a friend or neighbor about this resource.
We want everyone’s Fairwood experience to be safe and enjoyable.

County Executive seeks applications for Board of Education appointments

By Rushern L. Baker, III, County Executive

Recently, Governor O'Malley signed into law the Maryland House of Delegates Bill 1107 (HB 1107).  HB 1107 enables the County Executive to select the next Superintendent, who upon passage of this legislation, is now referred to as the Chief Executive Officer of the Prince George's County Public Schools.  The legislation also grants the County Executive authority to select the Chair and Vice Chair and appoint three new members to the Board of Education, while the County Council will have the ability to appoint one member.

Residents who are interested in serving as appointed members of the Prince George's County Board of Education may submit an application.  The appointees, who must be County residents, will serve four-year terms.  Applications are available here on the County's website, in public libraries and at the County Administration Building upon request.  Applications should be emailed to educationboard@co.pg.md.us or mailed/delivered to the Office of the County Executive, County Administration Building, 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive, Upper Marlboro, Maryland 20772-3050.  All applications must be postmarked or date stamped by Friday, May 10, 2013. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The quality and reputation of a public school system is the "calling card" of any jurisdiction.  It is the reason why citizens and businesses decide to locate or remain in our County.  We must all work together and be laser focused on successful outcomes for our students.  I have been encouraged by the number of citizens who have voiced their opinions and ideas during our recent discussions and dialogues on school governance.  I hope that you will continue to be actively engaged in the future of public education in Prince George's County. Please feel free to write us at countyexecutive@co.pg.md.us or call 3-1-1 anytime with any questions, concerns, or ideas regarding school governance or any other issues you may have.

2013 Covenant Inspections

By Iris Gilbert-Curtis, General Manager, Fairwood Community Association
The Fairwood Community Association will soon start our 2013 spring covenants inspections in early May (weather permitting) and will advise you of any non-compliant issues on your property. Some of the areas on which we will focus are:
·         Mulch.  No red mulch is allowed by the Association.  Only brown and black are approved for use in the community.  This includes the rubber chips as well.  The association also prohibits gravel as mulch.
·         Lawns must be healthy, neatly and uniformly cut, and properly maintained. Lawn maintenance extends to the street tree area as well.  Please be sure to remove weeds, cut grass and trim tree branches as needed.
·         Dead plants or trees must be removed and replaced with “like kind” plants or trees (without Architectural Review Board approval) or other species if approved by the ARB.  Shrubs and trees need to be trimmed away from windows and doors, and the beds need to be cleaned.  This includes leaf, debris and newspaper removal as well.
·         Tree stakes more than two year’s old must be removed and properly disposed of. Stakes in place for more than two years may be permitted if you have a letter from your landscaper that documents the need for the longer installation.
·         Post lamps and garage lamps must be in good repair and functional order and should be illuminated nightly.
·         Homes and sheds must be in good repair and finish. Faded doors and trim need be repaired or repainted as needed.
·         Missing and/or faded shutters must be replaced or repainted as needed.  To aid this process, the Association has engaged two licensed (insured) contractors to assist residents who are cited for shutter violations (and can’t find a reputable contractor to do the work).  The contractors’ names, contact information and prices are posted on the website under the link “2013 Shutters”.  Login is required.
You should also be aware of Community Codes that are frequently violated and will be a focus of the Association as well:
·         Exterior Modifications.  Except as expressly stated in the Residential Design Guidelines for Homeowner Modifications, the ARB has the authority to review and approve the design of all exterior improvements made upon the property, whether covered in the Guidelines or not.  Specifically, any clearing, grading, removal of trees, construction or improvement to any site must be reviewed and approved by the ARB prior to commencement of the work.  Such improvements include, but are not limited to, all permanent as well as temporary buildings, accessory structures, additions, fencing, lighting, major landscaping, storm doors, decks, patios, play equipment, etc.  No work may begin until and unless written approval has been obtained from ARB. During the inspections, unapproved changes or additions will be cited with a “Friendly Reminder” to make you aware of the need to submit an application for ARB approval.
·         Pets. Pets are not permitted on Community Property unless they are accompanied by a responsible person and unless they are carried or leashed.  The person accompanying the pet is responsible for the removal and disposal of any solid waste products deposited by the pet on Community Property or other residential Lots.
·         Trash. Trash, garbage and recycling containers are not permitted to remain in public view except on days of collection and after 6:00 p.m. on days prior to collection.  Trash must be stored in closed durable containers.  Except on days of collection or after 6:00 p.m. on days prior to collection, all trash, garbage and recycling containers must be kept in the garages or rear yards of the Lots, and screened from public view at all times.
Please help Fairwood remain beautiful by following the community codes and guidelines.
